Can a game be so manly that only a chosen few can handle so much manliness? Possibly but, despite my obvious lack of testosterone I will buy it anyways. Double Fine the vaguely mad geniuses behind some of my all time favorite games showed off their latest title Trenched at PAX East in Boston.
I had the chance to talk to Brad Muir, designer and all around bad-ass at Double Fine, about Trenched. Most of our shenanigans were caught on tape so I'll skip to one of the coolest features, that is beside the sweet organic mech TV creatures that is, the art style. According to Brad the studio wanted to make an incredibly manly game in play and style. They drew heavily on advertisements and graphics from the 1950's that feature chain smoking tough guys. You know the sort square jawed and steely gaze with a stogy clenched tightly between his teeth. For the walking TV mechs Double Fine combines futuristic styles, or what designers in the 50's thought the future would look like (minus the hover cars), with an organic twist creating some seriously crazy mechs. The visuals in this game will not disappoint fans of Double Fine's unique style.
OK brass tacks time. Trenched features a robust single player campaign and co-op which supports up to four players. Game play mixes tower defense with mech battles and throws in a healthy does of customization. Players can change up their mech as they find and unlock items, they can even change up the mech's pilot like you're playing Marine dress-up. Trenched will be invading XBLA sometime in 2011 for an as yet undisclosed amount of points. I for one cannot wait to get my hands on this title!
